Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a familiar term that describes a condition of the wrist in which the median nerve, the main nerve that provides feeling to the palm and fingers, becomes compressed. In addition, it also is responsible for providing the motor control of some of the muscles of the thumb. Signs of carpal tunnel syndrome can include numbness, pain and tingling in the wrists and hands, and thumb muscle weakness. Patients who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome tend to frequently perform repetitive activities that involve these nerves, such as writing, typing, or using hand tools. The signs and symptoms of Carpal tunnel syndrome may be mild, moderate, or severe and usually worsen without treatment.
Signature Plastic Surgery offers a surgical solution to carpal tunnel syndrome. After a series of nerve function tests, Dr. Riley will make a recommendation and let you know if it is a good idea to proceed with carpal tunnel surgery. Although surgery is usually the optimal treatment, in some cases, anti-inflammatory medication and splinting may be sufficient. During surgery, Dr. Riley will skillfully divide the wrist ligament and make any necessary adjustments to relieve compression of the nerves. Following surgery, patients usually notice an immediate improvement and alleviation of symptoms. It is important to seek treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome as soon as symptoms occur, and before any permanent nerve damage is done.
