Breast Reduction in Sugar Land, TX

Dr. David Stapenhorst of Signature Plastic Surgery offers Breast Reduction procedures to the residents of Sugar Land, Texas, and Houston, Texas. While breast enlargement gains popularity, some women suffer from breasts that are too large for their frame. Breasts that are too large often result in back problems, shoulder problems and bruises from ill-fitting bras. Petite women generally experience the most significant problems when their breasts are too large. The goal of Breast Reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is to reduce the size of the breasts, and bring them into proportion with the size of the woman’s frame.

What happens during the Breast Reduction procedure by Dr. David Stapenhorst?

During a Breast Reduction, Dr. Stapenhorst removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts. Before the surgery, the patient is put to sleep using a general anesthetic. One of three incision patterns is used for breast reduction surgery — a circular pattern around the nipple and areola, a keyhole shape or an incision that is similar to an inverted letter “T”. Once the incision is made, the excess skin, tissue and fat are removed. The nipple is typically repositioned to maintain a natural appearance. The breast tissue may be lifted and shaped. Dr. Stapenhorst closes the incisions and wraps the breasts with gauze and an elastic wrap.

When can normal activities resume after the Breast Reduction procedure?

Dr. Stapenhorst advises his patients that they may return to work between one and two weeks after surgery. Typically, physically active patients return to their normal activities after six weeks. Lifting heavy objects before the incisions are fully healed may result in worsening of the scars at the incision sites.

Is there any pain associated with the Breast Reduction procedure?

Dr. Stapenhorst advises his patients that their breasts will be tender and sore after the surgery. He may prescribe a pain medication to help the patient remain comfortable during the healing process. Most patients tolerate the procedure very well and say that the pain from the surgery is offset by the improvement of the symptoms that they had as a result of having large breasts.

How Long Is The Recovery After Breast Reduction?

The recovery time after a breast reduction can vary, but most women take up to two weeks away from work or school in order to maintain light activity and get plenty of rest. Heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided for six to eight weeks though it may be longer. Throughout the recovery period, a compression bandage or surgical bra will need to be worn. You may experience swelling, tenderness, or bruising around the breasts. Dr. Stapenhorst can provide you with pain management options to help alleviate discomfort.
