Dermabrasion in Sugar Land, TX

Dr. David Stapenhorst of Signature Plastic Surgery offers Dermabrasion procedures to the residents of Sugar Land, Texas, and Houston, Texas. Dr. Stapenhorst typically recommends Dermabrasion to patients who want to correct skin issues that are caused by scars and previous surgeries. The procedure removes uneven areas of the skin such as scar tissue. Dr. Stapenhorst may also recommend Dermabrasion to patients who want to eliminate fine lines around the mouth or keratoses, which are pre-cancerous growths.

What happens during the Dermabrasion procedure by Dr. David Stapenhorst?

Typically, Dr. Stapenhorst administers a local anesthesia to numb the area being treated with the Dermabrasion. For some patients, Dr. Stapenhorst may recommend general anesthesia or a sedative to keep the patient comfortable during the procedure. Dr. Stapenhorst uses a special motorized brush to scrape away the unwanted skin or scar. When Dr. Stapenhorst is satisfied with the results of the Dermabrasion he treats the skin with a special ointment, and may dress the treatment area.

When can normal activities resume after the Dermabrasion procedure?

Depending on the extent of the procedure, patients who undergo Dermabrasion procedures typically return to full activities between three and six weeks. Dr. Stapenhorst recommends that his Dermabrasion patients stay home from work for one to two weeks, and avoid sports for a period of four to six weeks. Dermabrasion patients should avoid the sun for six to 12 months. Patients who swim should keep their faces out of chlorinated pool water until the face is fully healed.

Is there any pain associated with the Dermabrasion procedure?

Patients typically describe the experience of Dermabrasion as similar to scraping their knees when they were children. Dr. Stapenhorst advises his patients that they will feel a sensation of tingling, burning and soreness while the skin heals. Patients experience swelling, and the swelling typically resolves within three to seven days. As the treatment area heals, scabs form. When the scabs fall off, the skin underneath is pink. This is the new skin that has developed. Patients may experience itching at the treatment site.
