Are there different types of nose surgery?
There are two technical approaches to rhinoplasty. In an open rhinoplasty, an extra incision is used in the skin separating the nostrils. In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are placed only inside the nose. The open rhinoplasty technique allows Dr. Riley to precisely adjust the cartilage in the tip and reshape the profile.
Are there age restrictions on nose surgery?
Nose surgery should be performed on patients whose noses have completed growth, after age 14 or 15 when puberty is over.
Where are the incisions made during rhinoplasty surgery?
Dr. Riley will place most of the rhinoplasty incisions inside the nose, so no scarring will be evident.
How long is the recovery period following rhinoplasty surgery?
Swelling around the area and bruising of the eyes can result, but should subside within 1 - 2 weeks. Patients can help reduce swelling by laying or sleeping with the head elevated. Heavy cardio activity should be avoided for about 3 weeks, and contact sports may be resumed after 4 - 6 weeks.
Is rhinoplasty surgery painful?
Surgery on the nose is not as painful as you might expect. Pain is minimal, and can be reduced with medication. Discomfort due to bandaging and nasal stuffiness are the main inconveniences.
