What Is Plastic Surgery?

Plastic surgery involves procedures that address various areas of the body to improve an individual’s self-esteem or appearance. It is important that patients have realistic expectations of the results of surgery and a healthy mental attitude.  Dr. Stapenhorst spends time with each of his patients to ensure that they understand their surgical options and are therefore able to make the best choices to meet their goals.

Benefits of Plastic Surgery

Patients choose to have cosmetic procedures because they offer the following benefits:

  • Improvement in the signs of aging
  • Reversal of changes caused by pregnancy and massive weight loss
  • Addressing life-long cosmetic concerns
  • Correction of trauma-related injuries

Am I an Appropriate Candidate for Plastic Surgery?

You have to be honest with yourself if you are thinking about having plastic surgery. You need to know exactly why you want to undergo the procedure, what your goals are for the procedure, and what to expect in the short and long term.

There are two main types of patients who seek cosmetic surgery. The first type includes patients who have a strong self-image, yet are uncomfortable or upset about certain physical characteristics that they want to change or improve. Post surgery, these patients maintain a positive image of themselves and feel good about the outcome of their surgery.

The second type are patients who have cosmetic flaws or physical deformities that have decreased their self-esteem. These patients might slowly adjust to the results of plastic surgery, rebuilding their confidence over time. Their self-image usually gets stronger as they adjust, and many will experience a dramatic improvement in self-confidence.

What Effect Can Plastic Surgery Have on My Self-Image After Surgery?

Everyone has a self-image, which is the perception of how we appear to ourselves and how we think we appear to others. Individuals who are satisfied with their self-image often have more self-confidence, are effective in social and work environments, and are more comfortable in relationships. People who are unsatisfied are usually self-conscious, less effective in activities, and can be inhibited in social situations.

Whether for reconstructive or cosmetic purposes, plastic surgery promotes and encourages a positive, strong self-image. Even small changes on the outside can create dramatic changes on the inside and allow a person’s self-confidence to grow.

Will My Surgery Be Covered by Insurance?

Most health insurance companies cover reconstructive surgery, but the specifics of coverage may vary greatly from patient to patient.

Health insurance does not usually cover cosmetic surgery because it is an elective procedure which is not considered to be medically necessary. At Signature Plastic Surgery, Dr. David Stapenhorst accepts financing through CareCredit®, a third-party healthcare credit card. This financing option allows patients to make monthly payments on their cosmetic surgeries.

There are several gray areas for which insurance companies give special consideration. Eyelid surgery, for example, is usually performed to provide cosmetic improvement, but it could be covered if drooping eyelids are obscuring your vision. When determining whether a procedure will be covered, the insurer often looks at the main reason for the procedure – whether it is for aesthetic improvement or to relieve symptoms not corrected by non-surgical means.
